Where mental health and work come together
The Retail Mental Health Program supports adults who want to move toward employment while managing mental health challenges.
Offered by Prospect, this program is designed for people who may have been away from work for a period of time or who feel unsure about returning to employment. It brings together mental health support, peer connection, and hands‑on learning to help participants rebuild confidence and explore what comes next.
This is not about rushing into a job. It is about feeling supported, learning at a manageable pace, and having time to focus on wellbeing while building skills.
A program built around mental health
We understand that mental health can affect confidence, energy, focus, and consistency. Past work experiences or long gaps in employment can make returning to work feel overwhelming.
The Retail Mental Health Program is designed to be a supportive starting point. Mental health is not something you have to manage on your own while trying to learn or work. Support is part of the program every step of the way.
Participants are supported to:
Rebuild confidence after time away from work
Develop routine and workplace habits gradually
Learn in a real environment without pressure
Feel understood and supported by staff and peers
Who this program is for
This program may be a good fit if you:
Are eligible for AISH, ADAP, or Income Support
Have experienced mental health challenges that affect working or job readiness
Have been away from employment for a period of time
Feel unsure about returning to work but want support to explore options
Are looking for a respectful and flexible program
You do not need to be job ready to begin. Readiness can be built through the program.
What to expect from the program
The Retail Mental Health Program runs for up to 28 weeks , depending on individual needs and pace.
During this time, participants receive:
Ongoing mental health support
Support from peer mentors with lived experience
Opportunities to learn and practice retail and workplace skills
Flexible pacing, with the ability to slow down, pause, or re‑engage if needed
There is no single definition of success. Progress is measured in ways that make sense for each person.
Learning and experience at Prospect Art Collective
As part of the program, participants spend time learning at Prospect Art Collective , a retail art space used as a supportive learning environment.
This space allows participants to practice workplace skills in a calm and welcoming setting. Tasks are matched to comfort level, interests, and readiness, and may include:
Customer service and greeting
Organizing merchandise and inventory
Supporting store tasks
Behind‑the‑scenes or lower‑stimulation activities
There is no expectation to perform or to do everything. Learning happens gradually, with support available throughout.
Peer support from people who understand
Peer support is an important part of the Retail Mental Health Program.
Participants are connected with peer mentors who have lived experience with mental health challenges and workplace barriers. Peer mentors offer understanding, encouragement, and practical support based on their own experiences.
Peer support can look like:
One‑to‑one check‑ins
Informal conversations and encouragement
Support during learning and work activities
A reminder that you are not alone in this process
Many participants find it helpful to connect with someone who understands what it is like to rebuild confidence and move forward after challenges.
Support that continues beyond the program
Support does not stop when the program ends.
After completing the program, participants can receive up to 12 months of follow‑up support as they move forward. This may include:
Regular check‑ins
Support during transitions into employment or training
Help navigating challenges that come up after the program
For many people, knowing that support continues makes it easier to take the next step.
Interested in becoming a peer support volunteer?
Some people who have lived experience with mental health challenges and employment barriers may also be interested in supporting others through peer support.
If you are curious about volunteering as a peer support mentor now or in the future, Prospect offers opportunities to get involved in a meaningful way. More information about peer support and volunteering is available through Prospect’s Get Involved section.
