What DEAM Means for You as a Job Seeker

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM). In Alberta, this month is a time to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce and to highlight the importance of inclusive employment practices.

If you are looking for work, DEAM is a reminder that you are not alone. There are programs, services, and networks in place to support your journey.

Inclusive Employment Is a Shared Responsibility

DEAM is not just about raising awareness. It is about creating real change in how we think about work, ability, and opportunity. That change involves everyone.

For job seekers, DEAM is a chance to explore what is possible. For employers, it’s a time to reflect on how inclusive their workplaces are and what steps they can take to remove barriers.

Employers play a key role in building inclusive environments where people with disabilities can thrive. This includes reviewing hiring practices, offering accommodations, and creating a culture where everyone feels welcome and valued.

Support Is Available Across Alberta

Like Prospect, there are many resources in Alberta that support inclusive employment. These supports have programs and services that are designed to help people with disabilities explore career options, build skills, and connect with employers who are committed to inclusion.

What You Can Expect During DEAM

In Calgary and Edmonton, DEAM brings a range of activities and conversations focused on inclusive employment. These may include:

  • Job fairs and hiring events that highlight inclusive employers

  • Workshops and info sessions for job seekers and employers

  • Community campaigns that share stories and raise awareness

  • Opportunities to learn about your rights and available supports

Whether you are just starting your job search or returning to work after time away, this is a good time to explore what is available to you. You do not have to do it alone.

Disability Employment Awareness Month is a reminder that inclusive employment benefits everyone. It strengthens communities, supports economic growth, and helps create workplaces where people of all abilities can succeed.

Together, we can move toward a future where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and belong.
