What We're Hearing from Job Seekers: Insights for Employers

At Prospect, we work directly with thousands of Albertans who are searching for meaningful employment. Along the way, we hear what candidates are looking for, where they encounter barriers, and what helps them succeed.

If you're an employer trying to attract and retain strong candidates, these insights can help you strengthen your approach.

1. Candidates want clear, specific job postings
Vague descriptions and missing information (such as pay range or duties) can deter qualified applicants or lead to confusion later in the process. Clarity helps candidates self-select, which saves time for everyone.

What you can do: Use plain language. Include specific responsibilities, qualifications, hours, and compensation details when possible.

2. Online applications can be a barrier
Some job seekers, especially those returning to work or living with disabilities, find digital systems frustrating or inaccessible.

What you can do: Simplify your application process. Make sure it works well on mobile devices, use clear instructions, and offer alternatives when possible.

3. Job seekers value genuine inclusion
Many people we support are looking for workplaces where they can bring their whole selves to work. They want to see proof that inclusion isn’t just a buzzword.

What you can do: Offer accommodations, train staff on inclusive practices, and highlight your values in action. Share stories, not just policies.

4. Mental health support matters
Questions about stress, burnout, and work-life balance are increasingly common in job search conversations. Candidates want to feel safe and supported at work.

What you can do: Promote a healthy culture, offer flexibility when possible, and be upfront about the resources you have in place.

5. Skills aren't always reflected in a resume
We meet many talented people who have non-traditional work histories, gaps in employment, or experience that doesn't fit neatly into a job title.

What you can do: Focus on transferable skills. Be open to candidates who may not check every box but bring valuable strengths to the table.
